This artwork is a Japanese woodblock print from the mid-19th century (around the 1850s) by the famous artist Utagawa Kunisada (also known as Toyokuni III). It is a type of art called yakusha-e, which features portraits of popular Kabuki actors. This specific print shows an actor playing the role of Hangan Takasada, a key character from the legendary play "Kanadehon Chūshingura" (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers). This play tells the famous true story of the 47 Ronin who sought revenge for their fallen lord.
