This artwork is a traditional Japanese woodblock print from the mid-19th century (Edo period) by the famous artist Utagawa Kunisada (also known as Toyokuni III). It depicts a dramatic scene from a Kabuki play titled "Otogiku Sōshi" (The Story of the Otogiku Family), which is a famous ghost story. The two characters shown are the fisherman Yoshisuke and his wife Osayo, played by popular actors of that time. The print is known for its bold patterns, especially the striking blue and yellow robe worn by the fisherman, and its expressive, tense character faces.
