This artwork is a traditional woodblock print called Ukiyo-e, showing a scene related to a famous Japanese shrine. The text at the top identifies it as Tenmangu, a place where people go to pray for success in school and learning. The three men are dressed in fancy, old-fashioned court robes, and the large figure at the top represents a famous scholar who was turned into a god. At the bottom, there are two green lion-dogs called Komainu, which are mythical guardians often found at the gates of shrines to keep away bad luck. These prints were often kept by people as symbols of protection or as souvenirs from their travels.
