This artwork is an original Japanese woodblock print from 1852 by the famous artist Utagawa Kunisada (also known as Toyokuni III). It belongs to a celebrated series called "Yakusha mitate Tokaido gojusan tsugi no uchi" (Actors at the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō). This specific print represents the Kawasaki Station, which was a busy river crossing on the main road between Tokyo and Kyoto. It features the actor Iwai Tojaku playing the role of Shirai Gonpachi, a legendary young samurai who became a famous fugitive in Japanese folklore and theater.
