This artwork is a Japanese woodblock print from the Meiji period (late 19th century), likely by the artist Toyohara Kunichika. It belongs to a famous series titled "Ichikawa Danjuro Engei Hyakuban" (One Hundred Roles of Ichikawa Danjuro IX). The print depicts the legendary Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō IX in one of his most powerful roles as the villainous lady-in-waiting, Iwafuji. He is shown in a moment of high drama, holding a straw sandal (zōri) above his head, ready to strike a rival in the iconic "sandal-beating scene" from the play "Kagamiyama Kokyo no Nishiki-e."
