This is a Japanese woodblock print, or Ukiyo-e, by the artist Toyohara Kunichika, who was famous for his dramatic theater scenes. It shows a tense moment from a Kabuki play, featuring two actors in character one dressed in elaborate samurai armor and the other in simpler robes with a very expressive face. The bold red background and the black silhouettes of birds at the top add to the dramatic and slightly mysterious mood of the performance. These prints were very popular in the 19th century because they allowed fans to own colorful, artistic "posters" of their favorite stage stars and famous stories.
