This artwork is a Japanese woodblock print from the mid-19th century by the artist Utagawa Yoshitora. It is the leftmost panel of a three-part picture (triptych) titled "Genpei Yashima Dannoura kassen no zu", which shows the Great Battles of Yashima and Dan-no-ura. These were famous sea battles that took place in 1185 between two powerful clans, the Minamoto and the Taira. The print features warriors in detailed armor fighting on the deck of a ship, with some soldiers tumbling into the rough, swirling sea.
